Tour the lovely rural area with its lush, rolling green hills with pretty villages in between rambling castles, canals and where the famed walled city of Chester is situated, a place full of meadows and wooded areas and shrubbery with a splendid scenery of lofty mountain peaks, beautiful rivers and fast-flowing streams.
The
popular tourist city of Chester abounds with an impressive medieval
architecture and beautiful historic buildings including a Roman fort
in the city completely encircled by impressive walls to defend against
Celtic raiders. There are extraordinary 14th century timber-framed
buildings situated along wide streets of two-tiered rows of shops,
all with their own special character and charm. The town is also renowned
for Britain's oldest known cheese, the famous crumbly white Cheshire
cheese rumoured to have acquired its flavour from the abundance of
salt marshes and where the original pork 'pye' was made back in the
mid-18th century.
There are historic houses and gardens, watermills, waterways, fascinating museums and a large movie set where you can follow in the steps of your favourite TV or film stars. Tatton Park was the interior shoot for Brideshead Revisited and Jon Pertwee era of Dr Who filmed at Peckforton and Lyme Hall, Lyme Park, was one of the locations for BBC's Pride and Prejudice. The region has its share of famous names such as the footballer, Michael Owen and actor Daniel Craig the new James Bond, who were both born in Chester. Lewis Carroll was born and raised here too, hence the Cheshire cat, Emma Hamilton (Lady Hamilton) was also born in the county and the famous Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell was brought up in the town of Knutsford.
Standing majestically is Beeston Crag, or The Castle of the Rock, which dates from 1225 when it was built by Ranulf, the sixth Earl of Chester, it sits 500ft on top of a rocky summit overlooking Cheshire’s plains, offering some of the most spectacular and unspoilt scenery, from the Pennines in the east to the mountains of Wales in the west and where the remains of a Bronze Age community and an Iron Age hillfort have been found dating back to 800 BC.
